Land Becomes a Nest

Jargon Projects is proud to present Land Becomes a Nest, a solo exhibition by Chicago-based artist Corrine Slade. Throughout her body of work Slade constructs dreamlike settings that serve as spaces of otherworldly comfort. Her environments are inhabited by Black women for whom these places of solace do not exist in everyday life. Slade evokes motifs of the natural world to fill her lush scenes with fruit, flowers, and other plants which signify the unimpeded and harmonious existence taking place in her work. Her constructed worlds serve as an escape in which beauty, fertility, and abundance are fundamental. Figures glow and cast light upon their surroundings as they too are nurtured by the verdant life that envelops them, each group growing in tandem.

Slade has also produced an edition of 25 copperplate etchings in collaboration with Chicago-based print studio Pigeon Hole Press. The print, titled Friends of Fortune, will be available through Jargon Projects for the duration of the exhibition.

Corrine Slade (b. 1998, New Jersey) is an artist living and working in Chicago. Her work depicts Black women in sublime natural environments and is driven by an ever-increasing need for escapism. Slade’s work has been previously exhibited at New Image Art in Los Angeles and the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. She received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2020.
